What's your favourite piece of brass band music?
"Serenade" by Derek Bourgeois.

What's your history with brass banding?
I started playing in primary 6 at Macalpine Primary School. Like lots of other players, I remember being keen to avoid whatever we were doing in class and I volunteered to try the music lessons.
My first band as a teenager was with the RNR Tay Division. I later joined Tayport Instrumental Band.
After a considerable break from playing I joined Dundee Instrumental Band in 2014. It has been wonderful to see our band grow in strength and players over the past 11 years.
What's been your favourite brass band experience?
Apart from the music, the best thing about being in a brass band is the friends you make. I love meeting up with players I know from other bands at the contests.

When I'm not banding, I'm...
Gardening! I spend a lot of time in the garden, where I grow both flowers and vegetables. I have a couple of grape vines but so far they've never produced enough grapes to make even a single bottle of wine!
I have been known to decorate almost anything with the band logo.
Fun fact about me
On a windy day, you might find me flying a 3-m Bullet Flexifoil kite on Monifieth beach. I don't do water kiting - way too cold for me!

Craig Glenday (Vice President)
What instrument do you play?
Drums/Percussion. Enjoyed a brief spell on the double b-flat. Very brief. And I say "enjoyed"...

What's your favourite piece of brass band music?
Got lasting and fond memories of a few things from my time at NYBBS - "Born Free", "A Disney Fantasy", "Overture to Mack and Mabel". And had great fun playing "The Typewriter" in a gig with my London band - my one and only "brass" solo...

What's your history with brass banding?
Learned music playing the organ and, because I could read, was asked to take up the double b-flat bass at Craigie High School; I said yes mostly because Mike Robertson's lesson clashed with PE! Played in the school band and one day was asked to help out on the agogo bells in Lionel Richie's "All Night Long". That was me hooked - never went back to brass! Then NYBBS (touring northern Scotland and Orkney, which was amazing!) At Uni, I joined the Dalkeith & Monktonhall Colliery Silver Band, under the baton of a Mr Alan Fernie - amazing time to be with the band. Then, when I moved to London, I joined London Metropolitan Brass, and a couple of years ago, when I relocated back to Dundee, I signed for the DIB.

What's been your favourite brass band experience?
I really enjoyed playing under Alan Fernie - Dalkeith was my first proper band, and I just assumed every brass band had a conductor that wrote brilliant and entertaining new arrangements every week. Also played at Dundee's 800th anniversary gig for the Queen and Prince Philip, which felt really special. And loved gigging at the cinema in Kirkwall (where I went to lean on a wall that was actually the screen and nearly tore a hole in it!)

When I'm not banding, I'm...
measuring giants and fingernails and massive bowls of soup for Guinness World Records, where I've been Editor-in-Chief for more than 20 years. I spend a lot of time on trains, chugging to and from London. Also Chair of the Stephen Sondheim Society - a charity that supports young people looking to build a career for themselves in the theatre. As part of this, I have the privilege of producing an annual talent competition that gets staged in London's West End. And when I can find the time, LEGO - I'm a bit of a brick fanatic...

Fun fact about me
I'm a former Curly Wurly stretching champion.

What's been your favourite brass band experience?
My first Scottish championships in 2019. The test piece was "Statonbury Festival". We were second last but it's still a very magical, nostalgic memory which I would like to go back to.

Ali Hill

What instrument do you play?
Euphonium (also baritone).

What's your favourite piece of brass band music?
I love a good march - "Knight Templar" [George Allan] is a firm favourite - not to mention the warm solemn sound of brass bands at Christmas. My favourite piece, however, is "Gaelforce" [by Peter Graham] - a whirlwind of a piece! A pleasure to play.

What's your history with brass banding?
I started playing brass at the age of 11, first on the french horn but quickly moved to the baritone, where I stayed in the banding scene. I started in school bands and Chorley Silver in Lancashire. At uni, I played with Aberdeen Uni Concert Band followed by Oxford Silver. Settling in London, I joined London Metropolitan Brass and took the 1st Baritone seat with Regent Brass. In 2022, I moved to Dundee and I’ve been playing Euphonium with DIB since early 2025.
What's been your favourite brass band experience?
Played for David Cameron, then Prime Minister, with Oxford Silver in 2011. Quite an interesting experience. But my all time favourite experiment was playing the Whit Marches with London Met; following B+R at the Delph was amazing!

When I'm not banding, I'm...
curling, cycling, working out. Baking: loads of baking. Walking the dog and generally being outdoors!

Fun fact about me
Attempted to get elected as an MP on several occasions. Lost my deposit each time :D

Lainy McLean (Secretary)

What instrument do you play?
Tenor horn.

What's your favourite piece of brass band music?
I don’t have a favourite piece as such as music for me depends on my mood and what I need to hear at the time. However I love a good traditional brass band march especially "March of the Cobblers" and "Death or Glory" (although the horn part for "Death or Glory" is pants 😆).

What's your history with brass banding?
I started playing cornet in primary school, P6 (not telling you the year though 😉) I played in all the Dundee school wind and brass bands. When I moved to horn, the school didn’t have one for me to play so DIB kindly gave me one until my new one arrived, the catch being I had to attend DIB every week - and there starts my relationship with DIB 💚 I also played in Dundee Discovery band - basically, if there was a band with brass in it, I was there 😆
Unfortunately a year or so after leaving school I had to give up banding as I couldn’t afford my own horn and there were none available in any of the bands. I returned to banding because I missed playing in the band at Christmas. I mean, Christmas is not Christmas without a brass band! And here we are today.

What's been your favourite brass band experience?
My favourite band experience is being the band secretary. I absolutely love it. I am so privileged and grateful that I have been voted as secretary again this year. It is a big responsibility and hopefully I fill that and do the band proud.
My most memorable moment? There have been so many. My most recent one is playing on the balcony of the Mills Observatory, what an experience! Definitely one that will stick with this Dundee girl for life.

When I'm not banding, I'm...
spending time with my four dogs. They're all spaniels, very energetic and absolutely crazy but I wouldn’t have them any other way.
I am also a Beaver and Cub Scout leader, hopefully teaching young people skills for life and having some fun along the way.
Fun fact about me
I did a solo parachute jump to raise money for Ninewells Baby ICU. I can’t remember the amount we raised but it was a four-figure sum. I was the only one to land on the cross but also nearly landed on a sheep at the time ðŸ¤

I started playing trumpet at Mossgiel at 11 years old. I joined the RNR band in 1980, and in 1983 moved to Forfar, where I still help out. I joined Tayport in 2000, the Discovery Band in 2006, until 2014, then back to Forfar from 2015 to 2020, before finally joining DIB that year!

What's been your favourite brass band experience?
I have a few memorable moments! I won the Scottish 4th Section with Forfar in 1993 then played at the Wembley Conference Centre, and won the Scottish 2nd Section with Discovery at the nationals in Harrogate. I also played nationals at Preston and Cheltenham, played for Prince Edward twice, and I love playing at DIB.

I played for Perth Youth Orchestra for two years before leaving for university, where I played in the Wind Orchestra and brass ensembles. In 2017, I joined Dundee Instrumental Band, my first contest was the Scottish Challenge Shield that year. After graduating from university, I headed to Liverpool for a year, where I played with Allerton Brass, and rejoined Dundee Instrumental when I returned back up north.
